There are probably no devotees of Neem Karoli Baba in any part of India. This Mahatma, who carried forward the great saint tradition of India, was born around 1900 in Akbarpur village in Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The parents named the child Lakshmi Narayan. It is said that Father Durgaprasad Sharma got Lakshmi Narayan married at the age of 11. But the child had been a recluse since childhood.
The Baba mentioned in this incident is none other than the great saint Neem Karoli Baba. There are thousands of devotees of this unique saint in the country and abroad. Some notable names are Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, Hollywood actress Julia Roberts, former President VV Giri, and former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.
Lakshmi Narayan left home at the age of 17. He was searching for God. reached Babania village in the Morbi district of Gujarat while roaming around. It is said that Lakshmi Narayan used to do penance by living in the pond here. The name was coined: Talaiya Baba. After a few years, Lakshmi Narayan moved from here to North India.
The next place for penance was the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The people of Neem Karoli village made a cave for Sadhubaba in the ground outside the village. The villagers lovingly called him Laxmandas Baba. Baba used to meditate most of the time. When he came out, the residents of Neem Karoli used to serve him a lot. When people surrounded by problems started getting cured by Baba’s blessings, they understood that Laxmandas Baba was not an ordinary person.
Ravi Prakash Pandey writes in his book “Shri Baba Neem Karoli Ji Maharaj: Supernatural Reality” that a childless man from the village prayed to Laxmandas Baba for a child. “Get a well-made wife, and you will have a child,” Baba advised. That person got a well made in the village, but its water was salty. Baba said, “Put 10 bags of sugar.”
“In the well, the water will become sweet.” The villagers did the same. This well’s water is still sweet after all these years.
The fame of Baba Laxmandas had started spreading far and wide. People used to come to Baba and tell him their problems. Devoted to the welfare of humanity, Baba would have solved people’s problems according to his power. If someone would have gotten rid of the disease, then someone would have been filled; if someone would have gotten a job, then someone would have been saved from premature death.
In his book “Yogi Charitamrit: Baba of Neem Karoli,” Dr. Rajesh Aggarwal writes about another miracle: one day during British rule, a monk wrapped in a blanket boarded the first-class coach of the train. The ticket checker let Baba down. Baba sat on the platform. The signal was given, but the vehicle did not move despite the driver’s best efforts.
Two hours passed. Then suddenly a person said to Baba in a joking tone, “Baba, blow the mantar-vantar, get the car extended.” In reply, Baba said, “We were dropped from the car; we had a ticket too.” People got angry at the ticket checker and made Baba sit in the coach. Baba patted the train and said, “Chal bhai!” As soon as he said this, the train started moving. Since then, devotees started calling Laxmandas Baba Neem Karauli Baba. Some people also call him Neeb Karori Baba. Around 1935, Baba went on a pilgrimage and did penance in the valleys of the Himalayas. He established Hanumangarh, Bhumiyadhar, and Kainchidham ashrams in Nainital.
Ravi Prakash Pandey has given interesting information about the establishment of Bhumiyadhar Ashram. On the orders of Baba Maharaj, he wrote, a chabutra was to be built over an ancient Havan Kund. The Forest Guard opposed it. Later, the forest department legally handed over the land to the ashram. Chaudhary Charan Singh was the Forest Minister of Uttar Pradesh at that time. One day he came to seek Baba’s blessings. “Ja, you will become Prime Minister of India!” said Baba to Charan Singh. Time took a turn, and Charan Singh became the Prime Minister of India. Baba is said to have blessed VV Giri, the then-governor of Uttar Pradesh, with the position of President of India.
Another incident is described. Richard Alpert, a professor of psychology at Harvard University in the US, started taking LSD while studying the drug and its effects on youth. In 1967, Richard came to India with a friend. In the Bhumiyadhar Ashram, without asking, Baba told Richard everything about him. Richard became a follower of Baba, but he wanted to know how one could reach samadhi by taking LSD.
One day Baba said to Richard, “Won’t you show me your medicine?” Baba snatched it from Richard’s hand and consumed several pills of LSD. Richard was surprised that these highly intoxicating drugs had no effect on Baba. Neem Karoli Maharaj made Richard his disciple and gave him the name Ramdas.
The divine personality of Neem Karoli Baba is discussed not only in India but also across the seven seas. In 1972, Steve Jobs was in trouble. He was saving for a trip to India. In 1974, Steve reached India with a friend. He meditated for several days at Kainchidham Ashram. He had many divine experiences. After returning from India, Steve Jobs designed the first Apple computer. He reached the pinnacle of success, and Apple became famous all over the world. According to legend, the reason for keeping the brand name and apple logo was because Neem Karoli Maharaj loved apples.
Jobs is not alone in this list. Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of the social media site Facebook, was troubled by Facebook’s losses. In 2006, Steve Jobs advised Mark to visit Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram. Mark came to India in 2008 and stayed in Kainchidham. Following that, he ascended the success stairs, which only dreams can see.
Many devotees of Baba have written in their memoirs that Baba was capable of doing anything at any level. Baba used to say, “Whoever comes in front of my photo, comes in my sight.” Hollywood actor Julia Roberts said in a TV interview that after seeing Neem Karoli Baba’s picture, she got inclined towards Hinduism.
This great saint of the 20th century considered the whole world as his home. He used to respect all religions and creeds equally. Baba considered freedom fighter Rafi Ahmed Kidwai a saint. After the death of Kidwai, Baba used to visit his grave and talk. The name of the driver of Baba’s car was Habibullah Khan. Even after almost 50 years since Baba’s birth, thousands of Muslims have full faith in Baba Maharaj.
Some of Hanuman Ji’s exclusive devotee Baba’s stories give me goosebumps. Ravi Prakash Pandey has written that in Neem Karoli village, it was forbidden to enter the cave without Baba’s permission. One day Baba was doing penance in the cave when a devotee named Gopal went to the cave with milk in a pot. Baba was engrossed in samadhi, and snakes were wrapped around his body. Gopal fainted after coming out. Neem Karoli Baba said to Gopal, “You should not have entered the cave without permission.” Devotees believe that this was the Shiva form of Baba. Baba’s favourite is Hanumanji, who is the eleventh Rudravatar of Shiva.
Neem Karoli Maharaj was not educated but used to talk to foreign devotees in their language. He was not your typical saint; he was dressed in Kesariya Chola and Tripund. Baba used to wear only a dhoti; later, he started wearing a blanket as well. stayed away from discourse.used to answer the questions of his devotees. Baba did not allow anyone to write anything about him during his lifetime. Many such mentions came when Baba destroyed many papers containing his personality and miracles. He used to say, “I am not a seeker after the world.” I have passed through the market, but I am not a buyer.
Baba built Hanuman temples and ashrams at many places, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Pithoragarh, Shimla, and Delhi. On September 11, 1973, he left his mortal body. It is said that many months before the Brahmalin, Baba started giving signs to the devotees. Even after Baba’s great journey, talk of his presence comes to the fore in many places. Ramdas has written in “Miracle of Love,” “A few days after Baba’s mahasamadhi, a devotee reached the Hanuman temple in Lucknow.” He wanted to meet Baba, but the priest told him that Baba had left his body. The devotee said, “This is impossible because Baba was with him only a few days ago.”
For Neem Karoli Maharaj, his devotees use epithets like “ocean of mercy,” “idol of compassion,” “great man,” and “deity.” He used to help devotees with their bodies; now he helps devotees without their bodies as well. Gurutattva is considered equal to Brahmatattva. Cricketer Virat Kohli, who has been struggling with bad form for a long time, probably went to seek blessings from Neem Karoli Baba after coming into form.
Baba asked an Indian girl four times, “Do you like joy or sorrow?” Each time the girl replied, “I have never felt joy, Maharaj ji, only sorrow.” At last Maharajji said, “I like sorrow.” It takes me to God.
