Later renamed Forest Research Institute and Colleges, the institute has a variety of centres scattered across the country that conduct research and teach forest officers and rangers. The training and research centres were awarded independent status of institutes after the country’s forestry research was reorganised and the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) was established in 1988. On the recommendations of the UGC, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the Forest Research Institute, currently one of the institutes under ICFRE, was granted the status of Deemed University in December 1991.

FRI Dehradun is one of the oldest research institutes in the country dedicated to forest research. It is the most comprehensive forest-based training center in India and attracts thousands of students every year to study and research every aspect of forests.
As part of a sprawling campus of 50 acres, the central tower of the institute incorporates Greco-Roman and colonial architecture with a floor area of 2.5 hectares. This institute with the backdrop of Himalayas is worth visiting at least once.
At one time, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the structure as the most significant brick building in the world. A prime example of architecture in the colonial style can be seen in the main structure, which serves as both office and museum.
Forestry research at the institute is made possible by a well-developed infrastructure, which includes a herbarium, library, arboreta, laboratories, a printing press and experimental field sites. The institute is a deemed university with six museums dedicated to research and forestry.
These include the Social Forestry Museum, Timber Museum, Silviculture Museum, NWFP Museum and Entomology and Pathology Museum. The building that houses the FRI is also home to a botanical museum, which houses a variety of trees brought from all corners of the world.
Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy is a prestigious study center that can be found on the site of the Forest Research Institute. The academy is governed by the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests (IMER).
The campus also houses the Wildlife Institute of India and the Central Academy for State Forest Services, both of which provide training in the field of conservation.
Architecture of Forest Research Institute
The Forest Research Institute is one of the most impressive buildings built during the British Raj. It is spread gracefully over a lush green estate spread over 450 hectares of land.
It was designed by CG Blomfield in Greco-Roman architecture. The building of the institute with an area of 2.5 hectares has a colonial style. The main structure of the building is approximately 1,000 feet long.
The installed bricks and mortar are dressed in repeating patterns, punctuated by molding strips. This further enhances its sheer breadth. FRI’s massive building has a simple, symmetrical general plan. There are about six central courtyards which are surrounded by wide corridors on all sides.
The stepped central entrance is flanked on either side by domed towers. A stone path divides the lawn into two parts.
Training Facilities at Forest Research Institute
The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), a separate agency of the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests, is housed on its campus (MOEF). The Central Academy for State Forest Services is also located there (CASFOS). The Wildlife Institute of India used to be on campus, but it has since relocated to Chandrabani and is now run by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. IIFM is a MoEF independent autonomous institution with strong forestry research and related activities linkages to FRI. IIM Kashipur is currently offering an executive management programme for working people on weekends. Cellulose & Paper Technology, Environment Management, Forestry Management, and Wood Science Technology are among the four MSc programmes offered by FRI’s deemed university, as are two P.G.Diploma degrees in Natural Resource Management and Aroma Technology. Every year, it also accepts a substantial number of Ph.D. candidates.
